The Right Pathway, Not Just Another Referral

Tinnitus patients don’t always need another referral. They need the right pathway. The Beltone × Ohio Ear Virtual Tinnitus Clinic is designed to connect Beltone’s hearing-care expertise with the medical and neurotologic expertise of Ohio Ear. Beltone remains at the center of the patient’s hearing rehabilitation and long-term tinnitus-management relationship. Ohio Ear provides the medical layer when physician evaluation is needed. Together, the goal is to create a coordinated tinnitus pathway that helps identify patients who can continue routine tinnitus care, those who need additional medical evaluation, and those who should receive more expedited medical attention.

Tinnitus Care Doesn’t Have to Be Fragmented

Tinnitus is common, but tinnitus patients aren’t all the same. The challenge for hearing-care professionals is determining when the patient can continue through a routine hearing and tinnitus pathway and when medical evaluation should become part of the process. The Virtual Tinnitus Clinic is designed to help answer that question.

Routine Tinnitus

One patient may have longstanding bilateral tinnitus associated with hearing loss.

Unilateral Symptoms

Another may report new tinnitus affecting only one ear.

Complex Presentation

Another may describe tinnitus alongside dizziness, changes in hearing, or other symptoms that warrant additional medical attention.

Beltone Owns the Hearing-Care Relationship

The purpose of this program is not to replace the tinnitus services already being provided by Beltone. It’s to strengthen them. Beltone continues to provide the patient’s hearing evaluation, hearing rehabilitation, tinnitus education and counseling, sound-based management strategies, hearing aids when appropriate, and longitudinal hearing care.

Ohio Ear provides access to specialized medical and neurotologic expertise when the patient’s presentation warrants physician involvement. Once appropriate medical evaluation or clearance has occurred, the patient returns to their Beltone provider for ongoing hearing and tinnitus care.

How the Virtual Tinnitus Clinic Works

Step 1

The Patient Visits Beltone

A patient presents with tinnitus or identifies tinnitus during their hearing evaluation. The Beltone hearing-care professional begins a standardized tinnitus assessment.

Step 2

Beltone Captures the Clinical Picture

The patient’s evaluation can include audiogram, standardized tinnitus questionnaire, digital otoscopy, hearing assessment, tinnitus history, and associated ear and hearing symptoms. The objective is to collect consistent information that can help determine whether medical review is appropriate.

Step 3

Secure Virtual Tinnitus Consultation

When the patient’s presentation meets the established criteria for physician review, the relevant information is securely submitted to Ohio Ear. A fellowship-trained ear specialist reviews the available clinical information without requiring every patient to immediately begin a traditional outside referral process.

Step 4

Medical / Neurotologic Triage

Ohio Ear reviews the case and assigns an appropriate disposition based on the finalized clinical protocol: GREEN (continue routine care), YELLOW (additional medical evaluation recommended), or RED (expedited medical evaluation recommended).

Medical / Neurotologic Triage

GREEN: Continue Routine Tinnitus Care

The available information does not indicate that additional physician evaluation is necessary before the patient continues through the Beltone tinnitus and hearing-care pathway.

YELLOW: Additional Medical Evaluation Recommended

The patient’s presentation warrants additional medical or neurotologic evaluation before or alongside continued tinnitus care. Ohio Ear determines the appropriate next step.

RED: Expedited Medical Evaluation Recommended

The patient’s presentation includes findings that warrant more timely in-person medical evaluation. The patient bypasses the routine tinnitus pathway and is directed toward appropriate medical care.

Then the Patient Returns to Beltone

For patients who are medically appropriate to continue hearing and tinnitus care, the pathway leads back to the originating Beltone location. Depending on the patient’s needs, ongoing Beltone care may include hearing-aid evaluation, hearing rehabilitation, sound-based tinnitus management, tinnitus education, counseling, ongoing hearing care, and long-term follow-up. Instead of medical evaluation breaking the patient journey, it becomes part of a coordinated process.

A Standardized Tinnitus Intake

A key component of the Virtual Tinnitus Clinic is developing a standardized intake process. Rather than relying on an informal description of symptoms, participating locations collect consistent information that can help identify which patients may benefit from physician review.

The proposed intake may include THI or TFI score, tinnitus laterality, pulsatile or non-pulsatile characteristics, duration and onset, associated hearing loss or asymmetry, dizziness or vertigo, ear pressure, neurologic symptoms, noise exposure history, relevant medications, sleep disturbance, anxiety or distress impact, audiogram, and digital otoscopic images. The final intake and disposition criteria would be established as a formal clinical protocol before implementation.

Three Tinnitus Pathways

GREEN: The Beltone Pathway

Some patients may have a presentation consistent with continuing routine hearing and tinnitus care without additional physician intervention. These patients remain within the Beltone tinnitus pathway, which may include tinnitus education, hearing evaluation, hearing aids when appropriate, sound-based management, counseling, and follow-up. The purpose of physician triage isn’t to medicalize every tinnitus patient. It’s to help identify the patients who actually need medical involvement.

YELLOW: Virtual Ohio Ear Evaluation

Other presentations may warrant physician review without necessarily requiring an immediate in-person appointment. Potential examples include unilateral tinnitus, asymmetric hearing loss, new persistent tinnitus, associated ear symptoms, uncertain otoscopic findings, conductive hearing loss, or tinnitus associated with episodic dizziness. Ohio Ear can review the patient’s available record virtually and determine what should happen next.

RED: Expedited Medical Evaluation

Some presentations shouldn’t move through a routine tinnitus-management pathway before receiving appropriate medical attention. Potential examples include pulsatile tinnitus, sudden hearing loss, significant neurologic symptoms, acute severe vestibular symptoms, or other findings concerning for potentially serious pathology. These patients can be identified earlier and directed toward appropriate medical evaluation.

Why This Model Makes Sense for Tinnitus

Tinnitus frequently intersects with hearing care. That makes hearing-care professionals an important part of the patient’s tinnitus journey. But tinnitus can also present alongside medical findings that warrant physician involvement. The Virtual Tinnitus Clinic connects those two worlds. Instead of forcing every tinnitus patient into a physician pathway, the program creates a structured method for identifying who needs medical expertise and who can continue receiving appropriate hearing-focused tinnitus care through Beltone.

A Stronger Tinnitus Offering for Beltone

There’s an important difference between saying “We provide tinnitus care” and being able to say “Our tinnitus program combines professional hearing care with access to specialized medical ear expertise.” The Virtual Tinnitus Clinic creates an opportunity for participating Beltone locations to offer a more integrated patient experience. Patients can receive hearing evaluation and ongoing tinnitus care through the provider they already know while having a defined pathway to medical expertise when needed.

Different From OTC and Online Hearing Care

Tinnitus creates an opportunity to demonstrate the value of professional hearing care. An online hearing-aid retailer or over-the-counter device can provide technology. A connected clinical model can provide something different.

Tinnitus Can Also Identify Patients Who Need Better Hearing Care

Tinnitus and hearing loss frequently occur together. For appropriate patients, understanding their hearing may become an important part of managing their tinnitus. That creates a natural pathway: Tinnitus Concern leads to Beltone Hearing Evaluation, then Ohio Ear Medical Triage When Needed, helping the patient better understand their condition. They return to Beltone for Hearing Rehabilitation & Tinnitus Care, Hearing Aids When Appropriate, and a Long-Term Beltone Relationship. Ohio Ear sees the patients who genuinely require physician or neurotologic expertise. Beltone retains the hearing-care relationship. And the patient receives a coordinated pathway instead of bouncing between disconnected providers.

One Partnership. Multiple Connected Ear-Care Pathways.

The Virtual Tinnitus Clinic can become part of a larger Beltone × Ohio Ear Connected Ear Care collaboration.

Virtual Ear Clinic

Abnormal or uncertain otoscopy leads to digital ear-camera consultation, medical disposition, and back to Beltone.

Virtual Tinnitus Clinic

Tinnitus assessment plus audiogram plus clinical questionnaire leads to medical triage when appropriate, then back to Beltone for tinnitus and hearing rehabilitation.

Asymmetric Hearing Loss

A standardized pathway for identifying patients whose hearing differences warrant medical evaluation.

Sudden Hearing Loss Fast Track

Helping hearing-care professionals rapidly identify patients whose sudden hearing changes require expedited medical attention.

Cochlear Implant Candidate Identification

Helping identify patients whose hearing aids may no longer provide adequate benefit and who may benefit from cochlear implant evaluation.

Better Coordination. Better Continuity.

The Virtual Tinnitus Clinic isn’t designed to add another provider to the patient’s journey. It’s designed to connect the providers who should already be working together. Beltone brings hearing-care expertise and an ongoing patient relationship. Ohio Ear brings specialized medical and neurotologic expertise. Together, the two can create a more connected approach to tinnitus care while keeping Beltone at the center of the patient’s long-term hearing journey.
